Starting a new project is always exciting and nerve-racking. It is exciting because we tend to feel the exhilarating joy of ideas spawning and new connections forming; it is nerve-racking because you never know what the future will hold for this new baby. Anyway, here we go!
Education is Boring is a newsletter with stories that highlight people finding ways to make learning more engaging and connected to the current context. The title of this project is a call to action rather than a static reality. We all know that smartphones, AI, and entertainment streaming are changing how humans think and relate to one another; this is why we should be actively - and urgently - looking for new avenues to harness the power of these technologies to improve how we learn. Time is up, folks: We must re-think education.
We captured the first batch of stories of this first chapter of our newsletter in Italy in the summer of 2023. It provided the best transition from our work with ITALchannel.tv, which focused on Italian and Texan Italian culture, to this new effort, which encompasses different perspectives, cultures, and disciplines.
Check out the first video below, which features an interview with Dr Joellen Coryell, a Texas State University professor deeply interested in transnational connections and transcultural collaborations. Dr Coryell is one of the main culprits responsible for a fascinating inter-university alliance that is currently developing between the iconic University of Padova and TXST University in San Marcos.

Dr Joellen Coryell
Joellen E. Coryell is Professor in Adult, Professional, and Community Education at Texas State University. She earned a B.A. in International Economics from the University of Illinois, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a cognate in English as a Second Language from Texas State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Human Resource Development from Texas A&M University. She has worked across her career in executive business management and corporate training, in English language acquisition to students from childhood to adulthood, as an instructional designer in health science education, and as faculty and program coordinator in adult education graduate programs. She has a passion for travel and cross-cultural learning and for understanding the influences of experience, knowledge, and culture on learning and teaching in higher education.
Dr Moira Di Mauro-Jackson
Dr. Di Mauro-Jackson, a native Italian from Rome, completed her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in Italian, French and English Comparative Literature. Her field of study revolves around French, Italian, and English Narrative and Drama of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, as well as Computer Assisted Language Learning Technologies. Since 1987, Professor Di Mauro-Jackson has been teaching French and later Italian at Texas State University, from where she received a Master of Arts. She has traveled extensively throughout the world and currently divides her time between study and teaching in Central Texas and the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Sergio Carvajal-Leoni
Sergio is an artist, songwriter, storyteller and researcher exploring the intersection of Education and Communications. He is the founder of Education is Boring and the creative director of www.italchannel.tv. He is a doctoral student in the program of Adult, Professional and Community Education at Texas State University, as well as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Sergio runs the boutique communications shop Tiburon Transmedia in Austin Texas and has directed, written and edited hundreds of video stories for multiple purposes and clients.
